<text>From a local newspaper September 1955

Although the Church clock can be seen from Reepham Market Place, many eyes have automatically
turned to the Sun Dial on the face of the Old Brewery House, the residence of Mrs. N. Bircham.
The long spell of summer weather this year has drawn much attention to its attractive white
surface surrounded by wisteria. Since 1724, when the house was erected the sun dial has been
kept in perfect condition. Above the figures are the words in black lettering "Horas Non Numero
Nisi Serenas," which mean "I only count the hours that are serene." These words were discovered
on an old sun dial in a monastery garden in Italy by Hazlitt and are the subject of one of his essays.
Our picture shows a group of Reepham veterans discussing the accuracy of the time. Oldest of the
seven, whose ages total 579 years, is 92-year-old Mr. Harry Hawes, who frequently supplies some
reminiscences of bygone days. With him are Mr. R. Harmer and Mr. W. Freeston on the left, and
Mr. Joe Piercy, Mr. and Mrs. J. Higton and Mr. E. Barrett on the right.
*********
Mrs. N. Bircham is Agnes Catherine Sinclair Bruce who, in 1903, married Francis Richard Samuel Bircham, son of
Samuel Bircham (1838-1923). She died in 1969.
Erection of the Old Brewery House in 1724 ? - most sources give the date as 1729.
William Hazlitt's Essay 'On a Sun-Dial' was published in 1827, prompted by seeing a sun dial in Venice during a trip to
Europe in 1824/25.

<text>Henry John Piercy (1860-1933) was a great uncle of Wesley Piercy (cousin to Wesley's grandfather Thomas Piercy). Henry was married to Emma Bowes in 1884 and worked as a gardener. In 1901 he was working in Euston, Suffolk, for the Duke of Grafton at Euston Hall. In 1911 Henry and Emma were back in Reepham and in 1921 Henry was working for the Kendrews on the Ollands estate and, as his address is Norwich Road he may have occupied one of the two cottages that belonged to the estate. Emma died in 1915 and the following year Henry married Fanny Hilda Archer. Henry died in 1933 and both he and Fanny are buried in the Whitwell Road Cemetery.
The photographs of Henry and Fanny suggest they were taken at their wedding in 1916.</text>
