Many advertisements appear for auctions in the area,
local ones were held in the Kings Arms or the Sun Inn, or
in a field as the Kerdiston example shows. Not all
auctions he led were in Reepham, others were held in
Cawston and Aylsham. Woolmer's autioneering activity
had diminished by the end of the 1840s.

1869 Birthday Event

Norfolk News 20 March 1869

A memory from Harry Hawes
"Mr. Woolmer wore a tall hat and black frock coat. Every night at about
four o'clock you could see him on his way to the church to wind up the
clock. One of the weights was made of iron the other was made of lead.
Each was suspended on 15 or 16 feet of rope. They each worked up and
down a long box. One day the ratchet of one of the weights got out of
repair. The crank knocked the poor old man and hurt him.
My mother with my help did the clock winding for a few months.
I remember seeing one of the brass weights the date 1760."

1879 James Woolmer's Death Announcement

Mrs. Marianne Woolmer
By 1845 Whites Directory Marianne was running a 'Young Ladies Seminary' in the Market Place,
according to Harry Hawes the school occupied the fishmonger's shop. Harry's mother Elizabeth
had been a pupil.
"Mrs Woolmers school for girls only one well known scholar was the Writers mother Elizabeth Ann
Watson now occupied by Mr. Wrights fish shop the market place."
Tracing back through the censuses it seems that this (in the 1950s) was the building now occupied
by Diane's Pantry. In the early 20th century it was the premises of at least two butchers - W. J.
Utting from about 1923 and before that by Richard Watts Austin.

Woolmers lived with Mr Woolmer standing to the far right of the image at his garden gate.

This is the earliest picture the archive has of the 'Bank Building' and probably shows it in its original
format, i.e. a central, double fronted shop with matching houses attached at both sides. It may have
been built by Robert Leamon on the site of a previous house/cottage occupied by James Ellis, a harness
maker.
This picture of the 'Bank Building' has been itemised separately.

Reepham Life Nov/Dec 2016

James, Hester & Mary : The Reepham Connection
In March 1976 Marjorie Gibbs wrote to the Eastern Daily Press, in response to previous items about
James, Hester and Mary.

Marjorie recalls them :'coming to our back door and mother used to give them a
meal. Because they were too smelly and dirty they did not
come into the house but ate their meal in the stable, feeding
themselves with fingers which were preferred to knives and
forks. Esther had to be hand fed as she was blind and was
never taken out of the pram.'

Marjorie's uncle Frederic J Gibbs had a watchmaker's and tobacconist's shop at Towns End. He is
named as a photographer age 29 in the 1911 Census when he was living with his uncle Edward Gibbs,
the ironmonger, and probably took many of the old photographs of Reepham.

Marjorie says that Frederic took photographs of
the three vagrants and printed them on
postcards (which they sold for 2d.) with the
following verse :
Here's Jimmy and Mary and Esther you see,
A typical picture of poverty;
With just a few rags to cover their ribs,
This photo was taken by F. J. Gibbs.

In April 1976 came another response with additional
photographs from a Mr Wade of Foulsham.
Why they were referred to as 'Minstrels' is a mystery.

John Symonds (18th Century)
Biography of 18th Century English clockmaker John Symonds
John Symonds is a well-recorded clockmaker from Reepham in
Norfolk who married Sarah Buddifut at Thursford on the 17th June
1774 and was known to have taken a number of apprentices,
including Henry Brook for 6 years from the 25th March 1784.
Symonds's shop was situated at the 'Sign of The Dial' in the northwest corner of the market square where his wife died in 1806 and
his son, also John, was born and died in 1810.
John Symonds was the clockmaker to the diarist Parson Woodforde
who lived at Weston Longville from 1776 until his death in 1803 and
who made numerous interesting entries regarding Symonds over a
period of time including, on the 31st August 1776: "Mr Symonds at
Reepham brought home my new clock today and put the same up,
for which I paid him £6.6.0. It is a very neat clock and I like it very
much." (See Norfolk and Norwich Clocks & Clockmakers, edited by
Clifford & Yvonne Bird for further information).

Extracts regarding John Symonds & his son from Parson Woodforde's diary

This is the earliest picture the archive has of the 'Bank House' and probably shows it in its original format, i.e. a central, double fronted shop with matching houses attached at both sides. It may have been built by Robert Leamon on the site of a previous house/cottage occupied by James Ellis, a harness maker.

Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee

1897

The morning broke with every prospect of a lovely day.
Services were held at the Wesleyan Chapel and also at the Hackford &
Whitwell churches. A detachment of the E Company Norfolk Volunteer
Rifles, under Captain Collyer, fired a feu de joie in the Market Place.
Feu de joie :- Soldiers are lined up & fire blank rounds into the air sequentially in rapid
succession, producing a "rat-tat-tat" effect.

By the kindness of Mr. J. J. Bishop of Kerdiston House, Reepham school
children were provided with a hot dinner & tea. About 2 p.m., the Hackford
& Whitwell school children with their teachers assembled in the market &
sang some special hymns. Later there were sports on Mr. Brownsell's lawn
followed by a substantial tea.

Reepham's Velvet Ale

1865

In 1865 the Prince and Princess of Wales – the future King Edward VII & Queen
Alexandra - made a visit to Gunton Park, the country home of Lord Suffield.
Returning to Sandringham the carriages were stopped, in order to change the horses at
the King's Arms Hotel in Reepham.

Whilst the horses were being changed, Lord Suffield
introduced Mr. Bircham to the Prince of Wales. His
Royal Highness was presented with a tankard of the
'Velvet Ale', for which Reepham has so long been
celebrated.
The Prince so much approved of the ale that he
expressed a wish to have more of it forwarded to
Sandringham.
