She was a domestic servant The photograph was probably taken in about 1921 when Alice was working for William and Mercy Pitcher in London. William had been a schoolmaster in Reepham, living in the school house next to the school on School Road (also called Whitwell Road). William and Mercy had lived in Reepham for more than 20 years but in 1921, after retirement, they are registered in south west London where Alice was their servant. Alice died in Reepham in January 1939. By the late 1920s the Pitchers were back in Reepham where Mercy died in 1928. In 1939 William was living on Norwich Road with his brother-in-law Archie Chaffey, also a retired teacher. Title A name given to the resource All Saints, Hackford Description An account of the resource Two similar drawings of the ruins of Hackford All Saints before the tower collapsed during the eighteenth century. It had previously been burnt out in a town fire in the sixteenth century. The tower was finally demolished in the 1790s. Written underneath the first sketch:- 'The South East prospect of the ruins of Hackford Church as it appeared the 7 June 1790 taken by Wm Brady' This sketch appears on the front cover of M. J. Sayer's booklet - Reepham's Three Churches. The second sketch seems to be a later copy of the first, signed by E.F. Boon, presumably Ethel Fanny Boon, a daughter of John Boon, Reepham shoemaker. Southern England, including Norfolk, had been the seat of disturbance stemming from poverty and extremes of hardship experienced by agricultural labourers who had lost winter income when threshing machines replaced manual labour. The riots were called Swing Riots after the signature ‘Captain Swing’ at the foot of threatening notes pinned to the doors of the mob’s targets, named by association with the threshing flail, or swinging stick. Since the end of the eighteenth century when allotments were first introduced in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, arguments had taken place amongst landowners, agriculturalists, clergy and farmers about the benefits of allotments and who exactly were the beneficiaries. Some farmers believed that the labourer would work less hard in his employ and might even become a competitor since ‘spade husbandry’, as hand cultivation was termed, produced more per acre than the plough. Members of the clergy considered it as a reforming institution, since only those men of good conduct and sober habits would be allocated an allotment, on the condition of church attendance. Some were sceptical that land left untouched by enclosure and improvement, deemed the only available source of the quarter-acre required for each labourer, would yield anything: all that remained or had been allocated as fuel or poor’s allotment was considered waste and was often boggy ground, as for example is Booton Common to this day. All interests were reluctant to relinquish their land. �But the Norfolk Chronicle for 20 november 1830 records: ‘Having often advocated the plan of letting small portions of land to industrious cottagers, we feel much pleasure in stating that it has been acted upon at Reepham, by Messrs Birchams who last Michaelmas divided and let eleven acres of land, which has proved a great accommodation and comfort to 33 poor families. Also at Heydon by Mr Richardson (author of the district farm plan) who has let a field of nearly seven acres to fourteen industrious men of that parish. Men, women and children, to the amount of about forty, are employed in digging their several portions of half an acre each [the standard area in those days, deemed to be what was required to support a family, while not being commercially viable and therefore a threat to other producers] with an alacrity and cheerfulness that is quite gratifying. The seed has been purchased for them and the money is to be repaid after the crops of wheat and potatoes are got in.’ Bircham estate records do not reveal where on his many acres the allotment land was located, and neither are there references to them in White’sTrade Directory for 1845. Despite their increasing popularity throughout the nineteenth century, as the perceived threat to landowning and farming interests was not realized, allotments in Reepham disappear, perhaps literally; there is no record of them on enclosure maps of 1846, 1882 and 1904. The earliest Ordnance Survey map of 1886 is similarly empty, but the O/S map of 1906 shows two sites, one of 1.956 acres behind Newland Villas, on Ollands Road and �another of 1.462 acres at right-angles to and between Ollands Road and Station Road, just below the junction of the latter with the Kerdiston Road and north of the Cattle Sale Yard. Both plots were owned by a member of the Eglington family. The first of these, but not the second, is recalled by Mr Wesley Piercey, a resident of Reepham since 1917; the land was finally taken for building in the late 1980s. Mr Frank Bibby tells us that the Ollands Road site also went under the developer in about 1985. Mr Micky Downes also recalls that Mr Cyril Eglington, another of the same family, let allotments on yet another piece of land next to Robins Lane, again lost to houses in the 1980s. Mr Piercey has a further recollection of Parish Council-owned allotments behind Sunbarn Close on the land now occupied by the Fire Station but these were lost in the 1970s, presumably when it was built. Reepham in wartime did not see an in crease in sites in response to the ‘dig for victory’ campaign; the population, it appears, were well-served either by existing sites or traditional large gardens but allotments history here evidently reflects the trend of loss to development in the 1980s. With the recent resurgence of interest, for the existing 6 plots off the Norwich Road there is a waiting list of in excess of 12 people and expected wait of 8-10 years. Its north end rests on a post which has an expansion in the plain of the north wall, not beneath the beam. There are also peg holes in the beam following an unusual pattern. A spine beam joins this cross beam. It has no visible stops at the junction, but its east end has ogee stops where it joins a beam across the eastern stack; this has a chamferstop at the north end. The joists are laid flat and are set in the wall to the south, but at the north they rest on a timber girder pegged to the studs. At the west end of the north wall of the room there is studwork on a high plinth, now cut through to give access to the extensions. In this sill a dead cat in a curved posture was found, and replaced. To the east, the studs are widely spaced. The east stack fireplace is small, with a bressumer much cut about. There are closets to each side with flat ceiling joists. East of this point is the 19th century facade block. A well was discovered under the door. First Floor The westernmost room, taken to be a later extension, has a higher ceiling than the next room, where there is a chamfered spine beam. The stack is concealed at this level. To the north, part of the room has been taken over the stairs; a beam crossing the recess is probably modern. In the southeast corner is the attic stair and here can be seen an arched brace supporting a tiebeam. The other side of this beam, in The Bays, does not have the brace visible, but two pegs mark its position, and there is another pair at the north end. There is a taper burn on the beam; this is a surface mark, not impressed into the wood, and thus more likely to be accidental rather than ritual. There are widely set studs below the beam. There is a studded post visible at its north end, but not at the south; indeed the south wall has no timbers visible. The north wall has studwork, and an inserted window. The wallplate is broken at the base of a principal rafter. The ceiling of this room has crossed ceiling beams set on edge, which appear to be of late date. There is an older tiebeam in front of the east stack resting on a wallpost at the north end, and with three pegholes on the upper edge. To the south of the east stack is a closet, and a small cupboard with an old door beside it. The jamb of the closet is attached by pre-modern nails. Attic The westernmost room has a single purlin in each slope. The top of the stack is visible and also a vertical flue to the south. The centre of the attic of Swiss Cottage has a truss from which a collar has been removed. There is one register of in-line butt purlins, with later repairs, and V-windbracing of a later date; but the principals stop at the level of a ceiling of boards on edge, above which there are only common rafters. Presumably the principals are connected by a collar in the ceiling. The wall dividing the two houses once had a central door; the wall is of studwork, with daub infill decorated with pockmarks. In The Bays, each room slope has two registers of purlins - the lower consists of in-line butt purlins, the upper should be clasped, as the central pair of principals are reduced; but in fact on the north slope the purlin passes on the outside of the principal, although the south principal clasps its purlin. A second truss against the east stack has a principal in the north slope alone. Between the trusses there are intermediate collars birdsmouthed over the purlins. The north slope has paired windbraces in each bay; but the south slope has only large flat rafters, although there are marks in the central principal that might once have held windbraces. Jack, 17, the only Jewish boy in his unit, the 3rd City of London Yeomanry is in the front row on the right. Jack travelled by train from London to Reepham to start his army career at the local headquarters of the Army Cyclist Corps. He was in Reepham for about six months before being sent to the trenches in France. Shortly after this photograph was taken in Reepham, Norfolk, Jack was invalided out of the front line trenches near Kemal in France with severe frost bite. The Reepham Archive has information about a young man called Jack Brahms, who spent some time training in the Reepham area with the 3rd City of London Yeomanry. After about six months training, he was sent to France where, in 1916, he was invalided out of the frontline trenches with severe frostbite. In the photograph (below) of his unit taken in Reepham, Jack is in the front row on the right. �Part of Jack’s story is told in a book by Jerry White about the Rothschild Buildings in Spitalfields, London. The Spitalfields area is famous for the Huguenot silk weavers who settled in the area in the 1700s, and later for the site of the Jack the Ripper murders in the late 19th century. The Jack the Ripper case highlighted how rundown and densely populated the area had become, full of common lodging houses, courts, alleys and interconnecting properties. Plans were made for demolition and rebuilding, resulting in tenements like the Rothschild Buildings where Jack lived. Typically, these flats consisted of two rooms with a small scullery and a shared toilet on the landing. The buildings were themselves eventually demolished in the 1970s and 1980s.
