<text>Christmas Memories
To be woken at midnight to the sound of carols sung by the Salvation Army at the
front door is something that is not heard today and has not been heard for many
years. But for a little girl back in the early 1900s it was a familiar beginning to
Christmas day.
Christmas time for her was being sent home on the last day of school clutching an
apple, orange and a few nuts, roasting chestnuts on an open fire and decorating a
small Christmas tree.
For her parents it was a busy time in the shop, an ironmongers and corn store. They
were open until 9.15 pm Christmas Eve, with many people calling in for last-minute
purchases.
Many tramps were also a familiar sight, a sign of hard times for some. One snowy
Christmas night a family of tramps appeared, snow covered, at the front door,
seeking shelter in the Lodging House in Back Street. Father gave them a shilling for a
night’s stay and away they went to find their beds.
Christmas morning arrived and Father Christmas had left a stocking and a pillow slip
at the foot of the bed. Once the stocking containing an apple, orange, nuts, sweets
and a cracker was disposed of, the main presents were opened. This typically
consisted of mechanical toys, a doll, often new slippers, always books and a bound
magazine of “Girls Realm” or “Chatterbox”.
Presents brought from relatives and friends were always opened in front of the fire
on Christmas Eve, leaving the following morning for family presents.
Once breakfast was finished on Christmas morning, a walk to the railway station was
a must, to meet the only train running that day upon which Uncle travelled. He
owned a butcher’s shop so therefore could not leave with Aunt on Christmas Eve.
A traditional dinner for eight of turkey and plum pudding containing threepenny and
sixpenny pieces, was enjoyed by all. There were always crackers, and the best china
and glasses were used. Special occasions deserved the best.
Later in the day after a supper of cold turkey, parlour games were played. Without
TV and radio, you had to find your own amusements. A piano was an important part
of this with everyone taking turns to sing around it. Games such as “How, When and
Where”, “Subject and Object”, “I’ve Got a Basket” and the “Parsons Cat” were a few
among many played, pausing only for home-made lemonade for the children and
wine for the grown-ups. Dishes of fruit, mixed nuts and almonds with muscatel
raisins were always served.
Bedtime came late, 10 o’clock, when a very happy, tired girl snuggled down after a
long, exciting day.

Boxing Day began with the church bells ringing, muffled in remembrance of St
Stephen. Later in the day hand-bell ringers would visit each home to entertain the
people.
A week later, the church bells would ring the Old Year out and the New Year in.
Something not heard in Reepham for over 70 years but remembered still as a very
special occasion by a little girl of 10 years old.

                    <text>Churches and pubs
Many people have heard the comment that Norwich had “a church for every week of
the year and a public house for every day”. We can only presume that the person
who made this statement had tried to visit each place and no doubt befuddled with
alcohol and Christian virtue, didn’t get too far and was left to make a calculated but
unfortunately an exaggerated guess.
The comment, however, does emphasise the point that in the past the community
used and supported many more churches and alehouses than it does today and
Reepham, like Norwich, is a prime example in this emphasis.
Reepham is perhaps, unique in housing three churches in one churchyard. Reepham
comprises of four parishes – Reepham, Hackford, Whitwell and Kerdiston – and each
parish (excluding Kerdiston) had its own church.
The church of All Saints Hackford was burnt down in 1544 and was demolished
sometime later although a small portion still remains and can be seen in the
churchyard just to the north of the Town Hall. The two remaining churches are St.
Mary’s and St. Michael’s. They can be easily remembered as St. Mary’s is the larger
of the two but has the smaller tower and St. Michael’s is the church with the clock.
Reepham has in the past had thirteen inns or alehouses; it is said that beer was the
common drink when tea was a luxury and a place like Reepham needed this number
to support its thirsty residents. Many of these have gone and have mostly been
turned into private houses.
The definitive list of inns, alehouses or drinking places is:
The Crown
The Kings Arms
The Duke of York
The Lamb
The Greyhound
The Swan
The Sun
The Star
The George and Dragon
The Black Lion
The Lord Nelson
The Farmers Arms
The Folgate

Only two from the above list remain today, the Kings Arms and The Crown, although
of course the town has a third, the Old Brewery House. As a hotel and current
popular “drinking place”, the Old Brewery is a recent addition to the town. Reepham
could boast its own brewery which was situated in what was formerly the garden of
the Old Brewery House and was in existence for about 100 years until the late 1870s.
The house was a private residence until it was purchased and turned into a hotel and
licensed premises in the early 1970s. In 1820 Mr. William Bircham, the owner of the
brewery, built “The Ollands”, a fine residence which was pulled down in the early
1970s to make way for the residential development now known as Ollands Park.

Conflicting stories over Booton Beck accident
November’s illustration in the 2022 Reepham Life Calendar shows a copy of a 19th century
lithograph published by Stone & Hodgson in “The Picturesque Views of all the Bridges belonging to
the County of Norfolk”, based on detailed accurate drawings made by Francis Stone (1765-1835).
A previous item on the Reepham Life website (December 2013) stated that the bridge over the Eyn
Brook was erected in 1820 and that David Williams, riding back from dinner with his brother-in-law
Peter Elwin at Booton Hall, fell from his horse and broke his neck crossing the ford over the Eyn
Brook at Booton.
Part of this information originally came from a photocopy of a handwritten item in our files. An
excerpt is shown, signed HEH, which stands for Henry Edward Hawes (1863-1957).

Researching the Williams family it transpires that David Williams died in 1811, with no mention of
an accident in his death announcement and no reports of an inquest into his death (Norfolk
Chronicle, 28 December 1811).

Harry Hawes wrote down his recollections when he was in his 80s, so he will have first heard
versions of this tale in the 1870s when he was a child.
David Williams’ son Peter Elwin Williams (1789-1826) was a surgeon living in Reepham. His death
was recorded in the local papers (Norwich Mercury & Bury and Norwich Post, March 1826).

Below is a photograph of the plaque on the bridge as it is today (Courtesy of M. Rogers).

There was a discussion at a Booton parish meeting in the summer about restoring the memorial
stone on the bridge, but, as the inscription is barely visible, this is probably not possible.

Cricket club’s perennial search for a suitable ground
The May image in the Reepham Life Calendar 2018 shows a photo of the Reepham Cricket Club
team in 1921.
Early information about a cricket club in Reepham is sparse, but there are occasional newspaper
reports of a club based in the town as early as 1805.
In the 1850s and 1860s the club appeared to be thriving – in one season even hiring a professional
bowler. However, the club must have run into difficulties and efforts were made to re-establish it,
notably in 1875 when, in spite of funds being provided by Rev. Sir Edward Repps Jodrell, and a core
of enthusiasts, a ground could not be procured. The club was later re-formed in 1881 after a break
of 16 years.
Finding a suitable match ground seems to have been a perennial problem. In 1884, when the
cricket club was again re-formed, the club resumed using a ground at Kerdiston, probably made
available by Barnabas Seely. But misfortune lay ahead, hence this extract from the Norwich
Mercury in May 1884:

In 1889 and 1890 the club was using Mr Brownsell’s Meadow as a practice ground. (Thomas
Brownsell was the farmer at Rookery Farm at that time, having previously farmed at Moor Farm.)
And in 1891 “Mr B. Stimpson kindly offered a meadow at Sall, gratis, for the use of the club”.
The later-1890s seemed more successful as the team took part in the Junior County Cup and
Samuel Bircham provided a ground free of rent – this may have been on land in Norwich Road
opposite where Reepham Fishery is now.
