Royal Observer Corps, Reepham Section

Title

Royal Observer Corps, Reepham Section

Date

1941-1950

Description

Standing (l–r): Bob Wasey, Jack Ling, Horace Collison
Seated (l–r): Gordon Frankland, William Burton, Cyril Lowe, Bob Smith, Ernest Tuddenham

The original source did not identify the man standing at the left-hand end. Based on comparison with item 681 this person seems to be Bob Wasey.

Dating of 1941-1950 is based on the large ROC uniform badge (the “soup plate”), which was in use between those dates. The fact that there are no women in the photo, and the smaller size of the team compared to item 681 from 1944, suggests that this may be post-war.

It's possible this photo was taken in the field entrance almost opposite Booton School (NGR TG 120 224). From ROCA records we believe the ROC post was near TG 112 225, which is close to the junction of Norwich Road and Church Road. But where did they get the chairs? Booton School (about 800 metres to the east) might have been the closest place. The background in this photo is also a possible match with the modern landscape as seen from the school. Certainly it does not look like any of the views from Norwich Road.
