Description

Two original photographs of railway bridges damaged by the 1912 Floods.
On the reverse is written "Railway Bridge on the Moor by Holly Heath"
The address will probably refer to Holly Heath in Corpusty.

Marriott’s Way Heritage Trail Project (which finished in June 2020) provided the following information:-
The image is showing damage caused by the famous 1912 floods, which were devastating all over the county, and in the east more widely. Hundreds of railway bridges were washed out in what was described as the Great Flood, This is likely to be at Themelthorpe, where both the underlying GER line and the M&GN one crossing it on the girder bridge were washed out. It caused a major breach in both networks.

The damage was repaired at the time, but the whole area changed in appearance hugely when the Themelthorpe curve was constructed in 1960 to join the two tracks together – creating what was then the tightest curve on the British railway network - so it’s impossible to visit this exact view today.
